Creating Hope, Performing Possibilities

I feel compelled these days to share stories that move and inspire me.  My “Words to Ponder”—which share short quotes that resonate deeply or help me see in new ways—isn’t the right place for what will be appearing under the category Creating Hope, Performing Possibilities. This was the theme of the 2023 Performing the World Happening(s) event held online last month. Four days was not enough!

My first entry is about Emma Sulkowicz and her journey from being sexually assaulted to becoming a political activist through her performance piece “Carry That Weight.”

Sulkowicz explained how carrying around a 50-pound mattress in her performance art piece was demonstrative of the experience of sexual assault survivors.

“You’re taking this cumbersome object that is in the bedroom and struggling to put it out in front of the world for everyone to see,” Sulkowicz said.
